Dunkelweizen
GERMAN-STYLE DARK WHEAT ALE
Our Dunkelweizen is a dark wheat bier combining the best flavors of the bready chocolate-like malt of a Dunkel, with the sweet banana and spicy clove and nutmeg esters of a Hefeweizen. This bier tastes like a chocolate-covered banana with a hint of baking spice.
Similarly to Hefeweizen, Dunkelweizen originated in Bavaria in the south of Germany. The heyday of Weizenbier began in the 1500s, largely under the control of the strongest local Bavarian clan or, later, German royalty. Interestingly, at this time, wheat was a privilege of the Duke and so weizenbier was considered the drink of the nobility, while barley malt was used for cheaper biers for commoners. By German law, at least 50% of the grist must be malted wheat.
